"So, Oversharer, are you choosing to cling to dreams that do not serve you out of the desire to be counted and celebrated? " This was just the invitation I needed. Especially as African writers and creatives carving out paths of our own, I am having to grieve the perception/acceptance of others, esp family. But the grief is making space for my possibilities.

It's sad because one of two things happen. It's either you find family in your journey of creativity or your family only latches on after the success.

I think I am happier with them never latching on because after the success it feels like a move of greed. (Yeah, I just overthhought that)

Ooh that last part! And I think continuing in our practice/dreams builds our safety and confidence in our craft to where we won’t need them to latch on or affirm our work. 🕯️

I am currently writing a piece about success, but it's mainly what I think it is and my judgment on myself. Validation is difficult to get, be it within or without...

Please alert me once your piece is out! And you are right, validation will always be a thing we seek, and we will continue to learn from.

This was awesome Nobuhle! The way you closed it out was on point too 👏🏽

"...are you choosing to cling to dreams that do not serve you out of the desire to be counted and celebrated? Or is this your season of grieving and shining in your light?"

I am in a season of enjoying my journey and the love I have received without expectation for "successful" outcomes.

The unexpected love is the fuel every creator needs because 9 times out of 10 we are in our heads and doubting ourselves. I am so glad that you have received that kid of support.

And thank you for reading!

I can very much relate to this. I have been self-employed for almost 8 years and people see this as something super unstable I do, and that I'm putting a huge burden on my family. I found that I can acknowledge their opinion, but not let it affect what I do. Of course, it's much easier said than done!

It is so hard to accept that you will never receive the applause or validation you need from them no matter how hard you work. A painful but necessary journey.

And in case nobody told you today, you are doing amazing Sarah!
